On this episode, Dr. Jennifer Young Pierce has a very important conversation about cancer risk and prevention with cancer researcher Natalie Gassman, Ph.D. Gassman explains how long-term exposure to the sun, e-cigarettes, common chemicals and BPAs can transform our DNA at the cellular level, possibly causing cancer. Plus, they discuss the small and practical everyday decisions that can minimize our risk of getting cancer.
Key Takeaways
- Exposure to the sun, BPAs and other environmental elements can
alter our DNA at the cellular level.
- When our DNA is altered enough to lose its integrity and function, it transforms our cells into a pre-cancerous or cancerous state.
- Age is a crucial component for cancer risk because of the compounding effect of DNA damage.
- Awareness and limited exposure to toxic chemicals and environmental factors can minimize and control your cancer risk.
- Moderation and introducing small healthy behavioral changes are your best defense for cancer prevention and a long-term healthy lifestyle.
Natalie Gassman Said:
We are exposed to the environment through the air we breathe, through the foods we ingest and through the water we drink. We also are passively exposed through our skin, which is our largest organ. Those are things that can impact our health and well-being.
You can balance having the lifestyle you want using convenience products as long as you balance it with other things in your life that create a healthy lifestyle like exercise and antioxidants in your diet.
If you can introduce moderate changes such as slow food a couple of days a week, sunscreen on your face every single morning, and then remember to reapply as your motto, then you’re going to build a healthy lifestyle and healthy habits.
Moderation is your best defense for cancer prevention and long-term well-being.
